One of the issues in Defenseless under the Night is that the US would need to boost their security of the homeland, because of the fact that the isolationist mentality is extremely behind the times, since the airplane would allow people to cross the oceans in a much shorter amount of time than it would have taken people in WWI, so with the formation of the Office of Civilian Defense (OCD), there were a whole lot of questionable surveillance tactics by the government which were directed at anyone who the government deemed to be an "enemy" which could include German-Americans, Italian-Americans, Japanese-Americans, suspected Communists, and others. Some of the modern versions of those questionable surveillance tactics would be a discussion about possibly moving from just searching the physical device that is called a mobile phone, and moving to social media searches, which while it is a good idea, but it wouldn't do much to stop future terrorist attacks, because who would think that a potential terrorist would have a backpack full of flash drives that hold a whole bunch of bomb plans and attack methods and a map of potential targets.

One of the stranger things that you may not know is that there were actually German U-boats that dared to venture out across the Atlantic and attack the (mostly) undefended transport ships . that were sailing along the east coast and even into the Gulf itself. The attempt at protecting those ships could be included in the wide scope of homeland security, there were so many ships that were attacked off the coast of NC that the area was named "Torpedo Alley". While there were 397 Allied ships that were sunk, there were only 3 German U-boats that were sunk, primarily due to depth charges and other incidents. New York Mayor La Guardia kept the people alert with the fear of submarine attacks, and he was trying to keep a delicate balance between information and outright paranoia, because if you know that the enemy has the technology to sink you ships with few losses, then would you be paranoid thinking that the enemy's ships were always attacking and never ceasing.
